SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy can undergo various heat treatment processes.
1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool
In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimum properties. Larger sections and/or delayed quenching may result in less than optimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and approximately Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.
Forgeability/Formability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended for achieving the best properties.
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges for forming at room temperature, even when annealed. For intensive forming processes such as bending or stretching, annealed material can be treated at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is achievable through creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is machinable using methods similar to those for austenitic stainless steel. This includes slow machining speeds, high feeds, and rigid tools, along with ample use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both the annealed condition and the solution and partially aged condition, with aging completed during post-weld heat treatment. It is crucial to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be done in an inert gas-filled chamber or using inert gas to shield the molten metal and heated zones, alongside a tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding may be performed without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod may suffer contamination by hydrogen during improper pickling, and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, brazing, etc. Such contamination can lead to a loss of ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod

Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should avoid use with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium across various media are shown in Table 1. CP titanium demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance in numerous environments, including:
Seawater and Brines
Inorganic Salts
Moist *** Gas
Alkaline Solutions
Oxidizing Acids
Organics and Organic Acids
Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium offers superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. It remains resistant to crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), irrespective of pH, even in super-chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium boasts excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits exceptional resistance to erosion in flowing conditions.
Our Grade 5 Titanium Rods, designed for high-strength aviation uses, exhibit remarkable resilience, enduring seawater velocities of up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) with negligible impact. Even abrasive particles like sand have minimal effect on their corrosion resistance.
Hydrogen Embrittlement: A Critical Consideration
When exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures, our titanium rods demonstrate insignificant hydrogen absorption. Hydrogen embrittlement in titanium occurs under specific conditions:
1. pH levels must be < 3 or > 12
2. Temperature exceeds 176F (80C)
3. A mechanism exists for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion: Unmatched Resistance
Titanium alloys showcase unique immunity to microbiologically influenced corrosion. Despite their non-toxicity to marine organisms leading to potential biofouling, this can be mitigated by chlorination or increasing water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue: Exceptional Durability
Titanium does not exhibit a reduction in fatigue performance in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent whether in air or seawater, making it vastly superior to many other materials.
Galvanic Corrosion: Titanium's Noble Position
In the galvanic series, titanium is near the noble end, akin to stainless steels, typically acting as the cathode when paired with other metals. This ensures titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion and can even enhance the passivity of more noble metals like graphite.
Fatigue Properties: Resilient in All Conditions
Grade 2 Titanium Rods maintain their fatigue properties in the presence of seawater, showing no degradation. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain identical whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability: Seamless Integration
CP2 Grade Titanium Rods are highly weldable with the right precautions. An inert gas shield is necessary for both the OD and ID of the rod, ensuring no grease or oil contamination.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rods are welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone, and post-weld heat treatment is not typically required.
