Pour choisir correctement un roulement à billes, il est important de prendre en compte plusieurs paramètres :
Les roulements sont partout et leurs applications sont donc variées :
L'application pour laquelle le roulement sera utilisé sera donc décisive dans le choix de la pièce.
Le roulement à billes supporte des vitesses élevées et des charges réduites, tandis que le roulement à rouleaux coniques supporte des charges plus élevées mais des vitesses plus faibles.
Les limites de vitesse d'un roulement sont déterminées par la température de fonctionnement.
La limite de vitesse peut être définie comme la vitesse de rotation la plus élevée qu'un parcours peut atteindre en fonction de l'utilisation, sans compromettre les performances et la durée.
La limite de vitesse des roulements dépend de plusieurs facteurs, tels que : type de roulement, taille de charge, classe de tolérance, configuration de cage, ensemble de travail, lubrifiants, lubrification, refroidissement, etc
2 types de charges sont supportés par des roulements :
- charge dynamique de base
Il s'agit de la charge maximale autorisée du roulement capable de fournir une durée de vie nominale égale à 1 million de tours.
Il est nécessaire de calculer le temps d'entretien nécessaire pour montrer des signes de fatigue sur les matériaux, et sur cette base pour déterminer la durée théorique.
- charge statique
Il s'agit de la charge qui s'applique au roulement fixe. Il correspond à une contrainte de contact calculée entre le corps de roulement dans le contact le plus chargé et la goulotte.
Les charges sont de type simple et radiales, pour les roulements radiaux, de type simple et axiales, pour
les butées.
La durée de vie du roulement est définie comme le nombre de tours ou d'heures de fonctionnement que le roulement peut supporter avant que des signes de fatigue apparaissent sur l'un des anneaux, sur la goulotte ou sur les éléments roulants.
La durée de vie nominale d'un roulement ou d'un lot de roulements identiques fonctionnant dans les mêmes conditions d'utilisation doit être équivalente à au moins 90 degrés de fiabilité.
La durée de vie moyenne d'un lot porteur est beaucoup plus grande que sa durée nominale.
La durée de vie nominale de la fatigue est exprimée en L10 (millions de tours) ou L10h (heure-service).
Les tolérances de roulement ont été normalisées à l'échelle nationale et internationale conformément aux normes ISO.
Les roulements sont généralement fabriqués dans la classe de tolérance P0.

Le choix du palier est donc principalement dicté par les caractéristiques de dimension et de charge auxquelles le palier est soumis.
